Class Information

Capoeira: is a 500 year old martial tradition from Brazil. It is characterized by evasive foot and ground work, acrobatic flourishes, and a unique variety of kicks from many unexpected angles.

Students in the Capoeira class will develop improved flexibility, rhythm, timing,  and total body strength.  They will also learn traditional songs and instruments associated with capoeira and its somewhat unique status as a cultural art.

Sombo: is a modern martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system developed in the former Soviet Union. The word Sombo is an acronym of SAMozashchita Bez Oruzhiya meaning “self-defense without a weapon”. It is a complete system with techniques for all ranges of combat.

Students in the Sombo class will work on both sport and combat Sombo techniques. They will be exposed to throwing and wrestling style takedowns, joint-locking techniques, choking techniques, flying submissions, and striking techniques in a high contact training method. The Sombo class is a jacketed class and students will be required to purchase a Kurtk (asombo jacket) for use in the classes. A judo or bjj jacket is an acceptable substitute.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ): is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position and using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit.

Students in the BJJ class will be exposed to throwing techniques, wrestling techniques,  joint locking techniques, choking techniques, and a high-contact training method. The BJJ class is conducted in a gi fashion. Students will be required to purchase suitable bjj or judo kimono.

Fundamentals of Grappling: is a class focused on the basic skills that will improve on the mat performance in all styles and systems of grappling.
